Terraflow: Case Study 02

Senior Playground

Olivia Su

Case Study 02:
The senior playground, similar to the senior community garden, aims to give outdoor recreational space back to the community and is located along Lexington Avenue. The senior apartment complexes can become uncomfortable and cramped spaces for seniors in the Summer as they are forced to mostly stay inside as it can become too dangerous to venture outside for fear of getting heat stroke and related illnesses. By developing an outdoor space that passively stays cool by utilizing the Terra//Flow brick wall system, it creates a third space that promotes active movement within the senior community while also giving them more autonomy during the Summer months in NYC.

The layering of the canopy acts as a secondary material system protecting the elderly from overhead sunlight.

The 3D bricks also support a bench seating area just adjacent to the exercise machinery, providing further rest while leaning on the naturally cooling terracotta surfaces behind them.
