Urban Osmosis: Case Study 02

Sports Field Shelter

Case Study 02:
The expandability of the Urban Osmosis system creates new opportunities for a shaded bleacher typology around large fields. Arranging existing or new seating systems with the material assembly as a canopy provides added shaded with new cooling benefits from evaporative cooling and humidity reduction phenomena stemming from the hydrogel paneling system.

Structure Axons

The surfaces arranged by the Urban Osmosis assembly system are derived from ruled surfaces, then mirrored and expanded across the site selecting various openings for entries and seating. Structure weight is loaded on columns to elevate the total assembly.

SectionsDrawings highlighting shared space and slow air movement

The assembly system provides total shade over the new seating area needed by the youth and athletes of East Harlem, with the form strategically tested with airflow simulations to ensure slowed wind movement to keep cooled air within the public space.

Shade Diagrams
The height and expansion of the material assembly begins as simply a canopy, but can be extended to larger bleacher typologies into school fields and even stadiums due to the repeatability of the construction into new shapes using the ruled surface design.
