Terraflow: Case Study 03

Cooling Station

Vaughn Corson

Case Study 03:
The senior bus stops become way-stations along the "TerraFlow walking path" that functions as both a cooling bus stop zone but also public seating with a community library. The diagonal wall that bisects the stop divides both respective zones into a slower sit-down nook and a transitional space for the travelling commuter. However the perforated bricks continue to allow cross-ventilation throughout creating an important cooling zone that can be replicated throughout East Harlem for senior citizens and passing pedestrians alike.

Site Analysis and Programming

The organization of the Terraflow walls are once again based on the direction of the windflow, capturing it through the bricks to cool the elderly waiting at their bus stop.

Combining that with the natural evaporative cooling of terracotta, it proves to be a highly efficent location along the TerraFlow path.

The bus stop evolves into a static, uncomfortable place for the elderly to begin their journey through East Harlem into one that recycles the environment through the material system to combat the Urban Heat Island effect, using the wind to pass through the 3D printed blocks and the rain to create evaporative cooling for even further temperature decrease.
