Urban Osmosis: Case Study 01

Cooling Shelter

Zophia Li

 Case Study 01:
The cooling shelter is a transformation of shade area not commonly found in East Harlem’s park areas into a version that deploys hydrogel’s phenomenal properties to enhance the cooling experience for the youth and athletes to utilize. As heat waves become progressively more common and the urban heat island effect at full blast during the summer, cooling centers with maximized efficency are critical for saving lives.

ElevationsThe form is allows for people to enter and not only sit, but also stand and converse for longer cooling periods.

End system attachements are visible at the feet of the form, anchoring the assembly into the concrete of the site.

Airflow simulations were preformed in order to test orientation and form design to best hold the air.

It reveals the area beneath the form has the least amount of air movemement.
